GSN Review: Diplomático Mantuano Rum
Diplomático Mantuano is a blend of column still, batch kettle and pot still rums and made from molasses and sugar cane honey. Mantuano (translated as “nobleman”) reflects Venezualan adventurer Don Juancho’s status as well as his passion for travel and the discovery of new spirits – particularly rum. Don Juancho’s picture is present on each of Diplomatico’s Tradition range.
The Diplomático distillery lies at the foot of the Andes Mountains in Venezuela. Its location was also selected for its close proximity to the main sugar processing plants in the area. Established in 1959, Licorerías Unidas S.A (LUSA) owned the distillery through its main shareholder, Seagram’s International, one of the largest wines and spirits companies in the world. In 2002, LUSA was sold to a group of Venezuelan entrepreneurs and became a 100% privately owned Venezuelan company taking its current name: Destilerías Unidas S. A. (DUSA). The company is proud to be an independent, family-owned operator.
The distillery is unique as it houses 3 different distillation processes which, when combined in blending, deliver unique rums.
GSN’s Thoughts: This is an excellent dark rum that hits all the right notes. Slightly smoky, crisp, rich and with a touch of molasses and toffee. We like the depth of character and somewhat wood-forward approach, giving it a more notable entry and finish. The middle of the journey gives a warm and somewhat tropical expression of mellow aging. We recommend Mantuano in everything from a Rum Old-Fashioned to the base in a Rum & Cola to a supporting role in a tiki-styled libation. Or try some in your coffee for an after dinner treat.
GSN Rating: A
